S.E. Smith over at Feministe has written a “starter kit” of disability terminology for non-disabled people and the media, which is well worth a read. Executive summary: “Person with a disability” or “person with (specific disability)” will cover most social situations, and avoid making people sound like charity cases (unless you like having a wheelchair footrest battered against your shins).
